Pyramids at dawn, feluccas at golden hour

Stand close enough to the Great Pyramid to touch limestone laid 4,500 years ago, then drift downriver on a felucca as Aswan's minarets catch the last light. Walk the forest of carved columns at Karnak, where sunlight drops between pillars taller than houses. Finish over hibiscus tea and brass lanterns in Khan el-Khalili.

02Abu Simbel
Ramesses II carved four twenty-metre versions of himself into a Nubian cliff. In the 1960s the whole temple was cut apart and moved uphill to escape Lake Nasser.

05Khan el-Khalili Bazaar, Cairo
Cairo's souk dates to the 1380s: a maze of stone arches stacked with brass lanterns, spices and ceramics. Take a coffeehouse table and let the crowd flow past.
