Deodar forests, snow passes and the roaring Beas
Manali
Manali sits at 2,050m where the Beas runs loud and grey-green through deodar forest, and snow ridges close off the end of every street. Mornings start with paragliders lifting off the meadows at Solang; afternoons drift into Old Manali's cafe lanes, apple orchards and the carved wooden shrine at Hadimba. Past Rohtang, the Atal Tunnel puts Lahaul within a day trip.

02Hidimba Devi Temple
A 1553 cedar-wood shrine to Hidimba, wife of Bhima, with a four-tiered pagoda roof and carved doorway, hidden in a deodar grove above the town.
