Monasteries, alpine lakes and Kanchenjunga at sunrise

Gangtok

Gangtok stacks itself down a Himalayan ridge, and on clear mornings Kanchenjunga rises white above the rooftops. Climb the old Nathu La road and you reach Tsomgo Lake, ice at its edges, yaks waiting in the cold. Evenings belong to MG Marg, where the whole town walks, eats momos and lingers under the lamps.

Best timeOctober to May — clear post-monsoon skies for Kanchenjunga, snow at Tsomgo in winter, rhododendrons in spring
Ideal duration5-7 days
