Goa runs on its own clock. Mornings are for empty sand and breakfast at a beach shack; afternoons for laterite forts, whitewashed chapels and prawn balchão eaten with your fingers. Then the Arabian Sea turns copper, the scooters come out, and suddenly nobody is in any hurry to be anywhere at all.

02Baga Beach

Panjim's snow-white landmark, reached by a zigzag of steps above the old town square. Its great bell was salvaged from the ruins of Old Goa's St Augustine church.

04Basilica of Bom Jesus, Old Goa
The UNESCO-listed centrepiece of Old Goa, consecrated in 1605, its bare laterite facade weathered deep red. Inside, a silver casket holds the relics of St Francis Xavier.

A 1612 Portuguese stronghold guarding the mouth of the Mandovi, named for the spring where ships refilled their water. Climb to the four-storey lighthouse for the whole coastline.
