01Parvati River
The valley's spine: glacier-fed and startlingly loud, it runs right past Kasol's cafes. Come at first light, when the peaks upstream catch the sun before the water does.

Pine forests, hot springs and the roaring Parvati
Kasol is one riverside street of bakeries and guesthouses, wedged between deodar forest and the milky-turquoise Parvati. Wake to the river's roar and walk half an hour through pines to Chalal for breakfast. Four kilometres upriver, Manikaran's springs boil hot enough to cook rice; a day further on, Kheerganga's hot spring steams in a high meadow.

02A Sikh gurdwara and Hindu temples share a gorge four kilometres upriver, built over springs so hot that pilgrims cook rice in them. The free langar runs all day.
