Santorini
Santorini is what's left of a volcano that blew its top — a crescent of cliff with whitewashed villages spilling down it, hundreds of metres above water so blue it looks retouched. Mornings are for cave-house terraces and strong Greek coffee, afternoons for a catamaran through the caldera, and evenings for Oia, where the whole village turns to face the sun.

02Oia Sunset over the Caldera
Every evening the lanes above the caldera fill up as the sun drops into the Aegean. Come an hour early, or watch it from a boat instead.

Santorini's capital, stacked in white terraces along the caldera rim. Shops, bars and viewpoints all night, plus a cable car down to the old port.

04Amoudi Bay
The tiny fishing port below Oia, reached by a few hundred stone steps or a short drive. Grilled seafood at the water's edge and swimming off the rocks.

Rust-red volcanic cliffs drop straight onto a strip of dark red sand near ancient Akrotiri, with clear turquoise water for swimming. Most caldera cruises stop here.
